SUMMARY

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen — literally, ouch! — both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

REVIEW

What’s not to love about a novel filled with creatures stemming from mythological gods and an underwater world shrouded in so much mystery it takes the reader’s imagination to new heights (or depths, as it is)? And then there’s that breathtaking book cover which is so simple, yet keeps drawing the eye. I’ve been looking forward to reading Of Poseidon since its release last year, but due to my mile-long to-be-read list, I only got around to reading it this week. I was laughing so hard at the witty dialogue in the first chapter, I’ve been glued to the pages since then using every spare moment I had devouring this magnificent book, so prepare for a gush-fest!

As always, I’ll start with the characters. Although the attraction between Dalen and Emma was instant, it was not yet love-at-first-sight. The love angle only comes in later. I should point out that this author creates her characters so superbly and believable that when one of them came to an unexpected end early on in the first few chapters, I honestly felt heartbroken, even though I’ve only known that specific character for two short chapters. I was also adequately impressed with the “villains” in this story, although they can hardly be considered villains.  The antagonists are drawn with the same amount of finesse and realism as the protagonists, and therefore it was hard for me to dislike them.

The world-building in this book is spectacular to say the least. My favorite scene was the one in which I got to explore the Titanic along with Emma and Dalen, and seeing it through Emma’s eyes, it brought tears to my own. The author effortlessly transported me from one world to the other, and characters in both these worlds soon became deeply rooted in my heart. Rayna’s character had me in stitches, and although she disliked Emma from day one and came across as spoiled and bratty, the story wouldn’t have been the same without her. She is definitely one of my favorites.

Of course, since there was no love-triangle in this book, I enjoyed the story so much more and it again raised the question as to why so many authors are obsessed with love-triangles? Of Poseidon is a terrific example of how a story can function without one, and still be an extraordinary, unforgettable read. The romance was there from the start, but at first it was subtle and moved along at a leisurely pace. Only in the last few chapters did it become a little wishy-washy, but not so much that I lost interest in the plot.

Needless to say, I had a blast reading this riveting debut novel by awesome newcomer Anna Banks. The story is original and fresh, unique in a way few YA novels are. It justly gives new meaning to “exceptional” and “different”, and it had me laughing, terrified, excited and captivated, from start to end. And Oh. My. Goodness. The cliff-hanger ending is a stunner!   I’ll definitely be first in line to get my hands on book two the moment it is released!

EXCERPT

FOR THE five seconds it takes them to stir around in their bed of shattered glass, Galen tries to swallow his heart back down into his chest. When Emma moves—then growls when Rayna pulls herself up—he’s able to breathe. Rayna shields herself when Emma kicks her legs out from under her. And it begins again.
Toraf shuffles up beside him in the living room and crosses his arms.
“Rachel left,” he says, sighing. “Says she’s never coming back.”
Galen nods. “She always says that. It’s probably for the better tonight, though.” They both wince as Rayna plants the ball of her foot in Emma’s back, splaying her across the sea of shards.
“I taught her that,” Toraf says.
“It’s a good move.”
Neither of the combatants seem to care about the rain, lightning, or the whereabouts of their hostess. The storm billows in, drenching the furniture, the TV, the strange art on the wall. No wonder Rachel didn’t want to see this. She fussed over this stuff for days.
“So, it kind of threw me when she said she didn’t like fish,” Toraf says.
“I noticed. Surprised me too, but everything else is there.”
“Bad temper.”
“The eyes.”
“That white hair is shocking though, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. I like it. Shut up.” Galen throws a sideways glare at his friend, whose grin makes him ball his fists.
“Hard bones and thick skin, obviously. There’s no sign of blood. And she took some pretty hard hits from Rayna,” Toraf continues neutrally.
Galen nods, relaxes his fists.
“Plus, you feel the pull—” Toraf is greeted with a forceful shove that sends him skidding on one foot across the slippery marble floor. Laughing, he comes back to stand beside Galen again.
“Jackass,” Galen mutters.
“Jackass? What’s a jackass?”
“Not sure. Emma called me that today when she was irritated with me.”
“You’re insulting me in human-talk now? I’m disappointed in you, minnow.” Toraf nods toward the girls. “Shouldn’t we break this up soon?”
“I don’t think so. I think they need to work this out on their own.”
“What about Emma’s head?”
Galen shrugs. “Seems fine right now. Or she wouldn’t have bashed the window into pieces with her forehead.”
“Do you think she faked the whole thing?”
“No.” Galen shakes his head. “You should have seen her on the porch. Terrified. More than terrified. She even let me carry her into the house. That’s not like her. I mean, she wouldn’t let me carry her backpack at school. She tried to snatch it out of my hands. No, something happened. I just don’t know what.”
“Maybe she knocked everything back into place then. Or maybe Rayna did.”
“Could be.”
After a few minutes of watching the gore, Galen pulls off his shirt. “What are you doing?” Toraf says.
“We should head toward shore. If Rayna’s smart, she’ll lure her to the water where she has the advantage.” They can already see that Rayna is doing exactly that. She’s made it past the pool, her arms roped around Emma’s neck, dragging her as she kicks and bites.
“But what advantage does she have over Emma, if Emma’s one of us and of Poseidon, on top of that?”
“Rayna knows what she is. Emma doesn’t. But I think now’s as good a time as any for her to know.”

REVIEW

Anyone who has read the Heist Society series or Gallagher Girls series by author Ally Carter will more than likely agree that this novella, which collaborates characters from both these series, are a genius idea. I, on the other hand, haven’t yet read either of these series’ but after reading three chapters from each of the first books as bonus material in Double Crossed, I am eagerly looking forward to getting started on both.

That said, I enjoyed the sneak peeks of Heist Society and Gallagher Girls and as this is the first time I’ve read anything by Ally Carter, I can see why her books receive so much hype. In Double Crossed her impeccable writing style had me hooked from the word go, and her characters are lifelike and authentic. The author strays from overused clichés when it comes to character descriptions, and gives readers freedom to use their imagination in immersing themselves in a high society setting as it suits them. Using details sparingly, but highlighting the important ones to ground the reader, she takes us into a world which feels convincingly real and makes you feel right at home as though you’ve always been a part of it. The witty banter between Macey and Hale is heart-warming and I’m so darn grateful the author didn’t set them up as love-at-first-sight or characters who are instantly attracted to each other. Each character gets a turn to shine and combining their individual “talents”, they make a kick-ass team. In the space of eight chapters I’ve gotten to know Hale, Macey and Kat so well, it feels as though I’ve known them forever.

A clever plot, three unforgettable characters, and a lot of imaginative twists, have me uber excited to find out what Heist Society and Gallagher Girls are all about! This is one read I’ll definitely be highly recommending to friends and fellow bookworms alike.

I received a free copy of this novella from the publisher, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

SUMMARY

After a fire destroys seventeen-year-old Julia’s home and kills her foster parents, she chases the half-demon responsible across the country and back, determined to avenge her family and discover why a host of celestial baddies want her dead. With Julia is enigmatic hottie - Cayne, who has his own score to settle with the half-demon, and who might be just as dangerous as the creature he and Julia hunt.

REVIEW

When I started this book, I went into it with low to zero expectations. I’ve read Before You Go by this same author awhile ago, and even though the writing was good, I wasn’t too impressed with the story or its characters. Once I got to the second chapter of Stained though, I was hooked.

As far as paranormal romances go, the plot isn’t really new or unique, but it is exciting and in the first two thirds of the book there is a lot of action and enough vagueness which raises loads of questions and keeps you turning the pages to find the answers. Ella James’s writing flows easily and she manages to draw the reader into the story by slowly unveiling the background stories of the two main characters, which of course adds more twists and secrets to the plot.

However, as much as I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue of Stained, I felt that in some places the story was rushed and there were quite a few jumps in logic. Certain things didn’t make sense to me at all and although I found the dream sequences to be imaginative and mysterious, they were also lengthy and didn’t add anything to the development of the story. I also found it strange that a two-hundred-year old character doesn’t know how to drive, but he masters this skill in less than two days and outruns the villains on the interstate, driving like a pro.

Stained is the first book in the Stained Series, so I’m guessing most of the questions I still had unanswered by the end of the book, will probably be addressed in one of the next books in this series. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and although Julia’s character got on my nerves from time to time, I still liked her as she acted the way a real seventeen-year old would. Cayne - mood-swings and all - is definitely worth the read too. Overall, this is a quick and enjoyable read, nothing too series. Judging by everything that had happened in this book, the rest of the series looks promising and I highly recommend it to paranormal romance addicts. Now I’m looking forward to reading Ella James’s Here.

AUTHOR CHALLENGE 2/2013: “IS THERE INTELLIGENT LIFE OUT THERE?” – by YA author, Melissa Pearl

Today’s brave author stepping up to the second author challenge for this year on my blog is YA author Melissa Pearl, best-known for her Time Spirit Trilogy. I challenged Melissa to, using characters from one of her books, write a little something about forms of intelligent life from her characters’ point of view. Well, one thing I can say for this courageous lady is that she didn’t hesitate to step up to the challenge. So, from her Mica and Lexy Series, here is what she has for you. Enjoy!

IS THERE ANY FORM OF INTELLIGENT LIFE OUT THERE?

"Do we really have to do this?" Lexy's pointy little nose wrinkles.
"Lexy, you promised." I give her arm a squeeze and put on my pouty face.
"Mica," she whines. "I don't want to."
I force my bottom lip out further and even try to make it quiver just a little bit.
Letting out a groan, she rolls her eyes and pushes my face away from her.
"You're going to be the death of me."
"Love you."
"Yeah, whatever." She tries to glare at me, but can't hold it and breaks into a smile. "If we're caught, this is all on you."
"Deal, but we're not going to get caught." I creep out the door and yank on Lexy's arm, forcing her to follow me.
"Mica, it's you. Of course we're going to get caught!"
I flash her a cheesy smile and she just shakes her head again. I can always count on my Lexy. She's choca-block full of best-friendy awesomeness and I don't know what I'd do without her.
We stumble our way through the dark room, banging into the sofa and muffling our giggles. I open the back door and gasp as the chilly air reaches in and whistles through my pajamas.
"Quick, put these on."
I start flinging warm clothes at Lexy, unhooking jackets and hats from the coat hooks on the wall. Reaching for a pair of my dad's thick wool socks, I lay them at her feet then find a pair of gumboots that will fit her.
"You know we're on lock down right now, right?" She zips up the jacket and shivers. "If my mum finds out about this, she's going to serve us for dinner."
I shove my foot into my gumboot and giggle. "And my mum will eat us."
At the mention of my mother who likes to refer to herself as "cuddly", Lexy starts to titter. The image of my mother tucking a big napkin under her flubulous chin and digging into a plate of Mica and Lexy casserole has my stomach trembling with giggles.
Everytime we look at each other a fresh wave takes us. We shush ourselves as we finish putting on the warm attire.
The cool night air helps me get control of myself and I turn to Lexy with a sober expression as I hand her a torch.
"They have been so paranoid lately. It's painful."
"Yeah, well, it's kinda justified. Last time they let us roam free we got chased by druggy gunmen and you nearly lost your leg."
"Hey, you were the one who got kidnapped."
"Exactly my point." She shines the beam at my face.
I squint my eyes. "I know it was scary for everyone, but I wish Mum would stop fussing so much. It's making me feel claustrophobic." I shove my spare hand into my jacket pocket.
"Is that why we're tramping across your farm in the middle of the night?" Lexy sniffs and buries her chin in the top of her jacket.
"Oh right!" I glance at her with a grin. Hoping she'll love this awesome idea as much as I do. "Okay, so you know Suzy MacIntosh?"
Lexy crinkles her lips.
"You know the girl with like seven dimples on her face."
She nods. "Mica, she has four."
"Did you count the one of her chin?"
"Yes."
"And her eyebrow?"
"I think that's a scar."
We climb over the gate into the eastern paddock.
"Oh, it kinda looks like a dimple."
I land with a thud in the damp grass and lead the way to the back of the property.
"So, your point?" Lexy prods me in the back.
"Oh yeah, so ok, in Art class today she told me that she swears she saw a bright light in the sky and when it fell there was this explosion of light."
"Okay." Lexy frowns.
"Like here!" I point to the ground. "On the farm. My farm, Lexy."
"How did she see that?"
"She was driving past or something." I wave my hand submissively. "Anyway, I thought maybe we might have some visitors from, you know... out there." I point to the stars, my eyes alight with excitement.
"What?!" Lexy's shoulders slump then she tips her head back and kind of does that fake crying-talking thing. "Mica! I could be asleep right now!"
"Oh come on, Lex." I wrap my arm around her shoulders. "Where's your sense of adventure?"
"I left it in my sleeping bag on your bedroom floor! My nice, cosy, warm sleeping bag."
I ignore her dry tone and spread my arms wide. "What if we did find aliens? How cool would that be? Imagine if it was like Roswell. Who knows, we might discover some pretty hot extra-terrestrials in need of assistance."
Lexy stops and tips her head to the side. "We already have boyfriends, you moron... and I'm finding that one is plenty."
I smile then let out a sappy sigh. "Yeah, one is more than sufficient, if you know what I mean."
Lexy's nose wrinkles. "I sometimes think you forget the fact he's my brother. So gross and please stop wiggling your eyebrows like that."
I do stop, but I can't wipe the smile from my face. I have the hottest boyfriend on the planet! I wonder what he'll think of me finding aliens?
Lexy gasps. I spin around and shine my torch at her.
"Did you find something?"
"No," she mumbles, wiping her boot in the grass. "I just stood in a cow pat."
"Don't worry about it." I shrug. "Those are Mum's gumboots, anyway."
"Oh, that makes it better. Thanks."
I giggle at her sarcastic tone then turn and keep walking. The cool air is beginning to seep through my jacket, but I'm determined to keep looking for a little longer.
We search around the back paddock for what seems like ages, but find nothing more than the odd dent in the ground, no metal, no hot aliens... nothing.
"Can we please go back now?"
I glance up at my bestie with a glum smile.
"I guess so. I was really hoping for something." My lower lip sticks out in a pout then I shrug. "I guess there are no signs of intelligent life out here."
Lexy shines the torch right in my face, giving me a pointed look. "None that I can see."
