GIVEAWAY: "WATER FOR ELEPHANTS" - by Sara Gruen

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS
by Sara Gruen

OVERVIEW

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

REVIEW: "BABY" (Species Intervention #6609, Book 1) - by J.K. Accinni

BABY
(Species Intervention #6609, Book 1)
by J.K. Accinni

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

A story deeper and darker than E.T. How could one planet evolve such complex and divergent examples of biodiversity?

The series “Species Intervention #6609” spans two hundred years, encompassing tender love between divergent species, political downfalls and violence of unspeakable order. It is an unfortunate tale of Armageddon and the remote possibility of redemption.

In Baby, Netty is a naive teenage farm girl given in marriage to an older brutal opportunist disguised as a successful citizen during the years of Prohibition in Sussex County, New Jersey. After years of enslavement, Netty flees into the night from her rapist husband, traveling back to the farm worked by her parents, where she rescues an unfamiliar damaged creature she finds in a cave in the woods of her childhood, falling in love with the enigmatic creature she names Baby. Together they find happiness and fulfillment despite the changes to Netty’s body wrought by the proximity of the unusual creature.

When a handsome Italian stranger comes into Netty’s life, complications ensue as she falls in love while trying to hide the bizarre and wondrous changes to her farm and her body. Netty, Baby and Wil strive to conquer obstacles thrown in their path by life, succeeding wildly until the heart-rending and astonishingly brutal climax to their story.

REVIEW

As much as I enjoyed Netty, Baby, and Wil’s story, it was a little hard for me to connect with these characters as the author used two different writing styles which I found slightly confusing and annoying at times. With Netty, Baby, and Wil the writing was too stiff and formal, and with the antagonists the writing was a lot more informal and too modern for the time period represented in the story. Although it didn’t take away much from the story, I felt the author should’ve stuck with either of the two voices for ALL the characters, instead of switching from one extreme to the other.

“Baby” is the first book in what looks to be a very exciting and promising series. Although this is a great read with a deeply touching story, readers sensitive to profanity, violence, brutality and cruelty, should give this book a wide berth. For the rest, indulge yourself in this novel with its cliff-hanger ending which will leave you eager to jump into the second book in this series to find out what happens next to this mysterious species.  I’m really happy I got this book as a free download for kindle. It’s a truly terrific story which will touch the hearts of most readers.

REVIEW: "THE MIND MAN" - by P.D. Richmond

THE MIND MAN
by P.D. Richmond

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

A terrifically original thriller - with style similar to Stephen King and pace like Matthew Reilly.

A book to make psychics and mystics jump with glee and skeptics to think again.

Do your thoughts stay your thoughts or do they affect other people?
What if they do and what if those people end up dead?
Could your mind be used as a lethal weapon?
What if it can...?

Sergeant Teddy Farrell is a reluctant cop in the Sacramento Police Department. He mistakenly risks everything, including his long-term marriage to his college sweetheart, to uncover a fiendish world of unprecedented greed and thwarted love. What he inadvertently discovers is a town full of secrets and an obsession with a fluffy rabbit.

A spine-tingling, emotional rollercoaster with a sumptuous dusting of romantic intrigue.

REVIEW

“The Mind Man” is such an extremely suspense-laden and highly thrilling read, that I simply could not put it down.  The tale starts in a small town in Australia with a boy whose best friends are his rabbits.  Then it sweeps the reader along on an exciting journey to Sacramento, London, the Cook Islands, Sidney, and a yacht near Acapulco, to literally come crashing to a grand finale in Paris.

Sergeant Teddy Farrell knows he is on to something utterly extraordinary when a car and two airplanes crash for no good reason and he is willing to do whatever it takes to stop the senseless deaths.  When a journalist reports that these accidents might be caused by some evil, greedy businessman with possible telepathic abilities, it attracts the unwelcome attention of parapsychological scientists and political rebels.

The serious and, at times, almost dark tone of the book creates the perfect mood for the events described.  The thoroughly flawed characters are extremely realistic.  Greed, ambition, selfishness, and even love, are the driving forces behind the characters, thus making them into far more than just players in a story book drama.  Even the ethical police sergeant has a disgusting lapse of morals when the opportunity arises.  The big question remains; can a person who loves rabbits and is a wildlife philanthropist also be a ruthless, murderous businessman?

As most of the chapters end with a cliff-hanger, “The Mind Man” is an absolute page turner.  The aforementioned cliff-hanger tactic also applies to the end of the book.  For a completely gripping and unforgettable reading experience I recommend “The Mind Man” as an absolute must-read deserving of far more than the 5 stars I can give it.  I sincerely hope that we will very soon see another book to continue the story of Adam, Caren, Teddy, and their many accomplices and enemies.

REVIEW: "SOMEBODY TELL AUNT TILLIE SHE'S DEAD" (Toad Witch Series, Book 1) - by Christiana Miller

SOMEBODY TELL AUNT TILLIE SHE’S DEAD
(Toad Witch Series, Book 1)
by Christiana Miller

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

A little magic can go a long way -- to really screwing up a girl's life!

Mara is having the worst month of her life. At least, that's what her cards tell her and they've never been wrong. She's evicted from her apartment, loses her job and is banned from Beverly Hills. So when the tarot cards predict her imminent demise, she uses a little magic to make her world right.

Suddenly, an aunt she's never met dies, leaving Mara as her sole heir. But when Mara moves into her inherited home, she discovers Aunt Tillie never moved out. She's still one pissed-off old lady, even post-mortem, and she blames Mara's magical meddling for her death.

When Mara accidentally releases a demon and awakens the spirit of the most powerful witch in history, Tillie's ready to kill her -- literally. It's the only way she can think of to save the girl from herself. The witch and the demon, however, have other plans for Mara's body.

REVIEW

The title of this book instantly triggered my curiosity. What the heck happened to Aunt Tillie, and how does she not know she’s dead? Or is it only that she wouldn’t stay dead and buried? And why does she have to be told she’s dead? All sorts such questions raced through my mind when I downloaded this book while it was free for kindle. Well, I finished it a couple of minutes ago, and let me tell you fellow bookworms, this one is a keeper.

The entire time I was reading this book, I couldn’t tell where the story was heading. Nothing in this novel is predictable, although the ending was a little too cliché for my liking. The first half of the story moves a little slow because the author spends a lot of time on character development. I, a stickler for character details, had no problem with this and happily cruised along. The second half of the book moves to the cottage where all the real action and drama takes place. Things get more intense around this time and the pace noticeably speeds up. What really kept me stuck to the pages though was the side-splittingly hilarious dialogue and wickedly witty banter between the two main role players. There is also a smidgen of romance – if you can even call the flirting between Paul and Mara that – but fortunately it was kept to a minimum. A fan of romance in books I certainly am not.

I was crazy about Mara and Gus from the word go, and I loved how vibrantly the author painted these two characters to make them a perfect fit as bosom buddies. Mara is a smart-mouth, tough-love, character who doesn’t easily get swayed by the many curveballs life throws at her. She’s a typical, Scottish-American with a fondness for jeans and tee-shirts, and she’s smart, impulsive, and an all around sincerely nice witch with an unfortunate dose of bad luck on her side. Once I got to the end of the book, I was amazed at what a strong character she is to have endured and survived the ordeals she had to suffer. But Gus on the other hand, was undoubtedly my favorite character. He’s exactly the type of loyal guy friend any girl would love to have in her life. Gus is a flamboyantly eccentric Greek-American Celtophile with a flair for the unfashionable whose wardrobe often resembles “Pirates of the Caribbean” meets “The Craft”.

However, as much as I enjoyed all the laugh-out-loud moments and the craziness of all the events that took place in Mara’s life, I was slightly disappointed with the last third of the story. Once Mara and Paul’s bodies were possessed by Lizette and Lucien’s spirits, it felt to me as though the story was losing its momentum. I didn’t really understand Lizette’s back story and I couldn’t feel sorry for her or Aunt Tillie as their history was only mentioned in passing. I still have no idea how Lucien fit into Lizette’s life or what he was of her other than her bedmate. In all honesty, I couldn’t really figure out how Aunt Tillie fit into the grand scheme of things except for being a supporting character used as a decoy so the reader has no clue as to who the real villain is. As much as I enjoyed most of the characters, I felt that some of the supporting characters were really unnecessary and didn’t add much to the story. But other than that, this novel really has a lot going for it. I couldn’t put it down until I had read the last page, where loose ends were tied up nicely, but enough was left over for the next book in this series.

Due to the amount of profanity and explicit content, I wouldn’t recommend this book for readers below the age of eighteen. For everybody else, this book is really worth it, even if it’s only for the fantastic dialogue with hilarious come-backs, and two really terrific main characters. Oh, and of course you have to read it so you get to meet Lord Grundleshanks the toad. If you ask me I’ll say he was the real hero in all this.

BOOK BLAST & $100 GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY: “IMPERFECTLY BEAUTIFUL” – by Diony George

Imperfectly Beautiful by Diony George

At 1:30 am, in New York City, Regan Wright is ripped out of a sound sleep with a jolt - her heart thuds in her ears and her face feels flushed. Straining to hear anything out of the ordinary, she fumbles to turn on the bedside lamp. Nothing seems out of place. Suddenly her stomach twists in knots - it's her identical twin, Rebecca. Something is terribly wrong...

Though twins, Rebecca and Regan couldn't be more different.

Independent and outspoken, Regan chose a high-profile career as a fashion designer in New York City. Despite her hard-earned success, Regan’s become disillusioned by the glamour and the glitz. She’s tired of coming home to a lonely penthouse apartment welcomed only by her cat and has all but given up on ever finding “Mr. Right.”

Steady and reliable, Rebecca chose to be a wife and stay-at-home mom. From the very first moment she met James Conrad—tall and muscular with eyes as blue as a cloudless sky—she was captivated. Married and four children later, Rebecca’s life is not what she expected. Her marriage has lost its shine and her sweet babies have become challenging and often unappreciative children.

Both Rebecca and Regan must discover, a higher power has the answers to what matters most, but when a serial killer strikes nearby, and his victims look eerily similar to the twins, will it be too late?

Praise for Imperfectly Beautiful

“5 Stars! Great Novel-Romance with Suspense. Captures your attention from the very beginning...then difficult to put down...A good solid read!”
-Booklover, amazon review

“This was a great book. I could relate to Rebecca and the trials she was going through with her marriage and her children. I feel this way at times too. I liked the suspense and it was enough to keep my hooked…”
-K. Neilson, Utah

“I enjoyed the development of the characters. Lots of dialogue took me right into the everyday lives and struggles of each person. The underlying story of the unsolved murders of women who look like the twin sisters simmers through out the chapters until it finally boils over into an exciting ending! I recommend it!”
-J.T. Bolla, Washington

REVIEW: "FIONA THORN AND THE CARAPACEM SPELL" - by Jen Barton

FIONA THORN AND THE CARAPACEM SPELL
by Jen Barton

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

When Fiona Thorn, an ornery orphan with an expertise in explosives, sets out to rescue her imprisoned friend, Jayden Rowanm she wants nothing more than a few sleeping guards and a satchel full of blast. What she gets is a run-in with three bickering princesses that puts all four girls on the wrong side of a locked dungeon door.

Now accidentally involved in a plot to assassinate the King and accused of kidnapping the princesses, Fiona must find a way to free them all, save the king, and rescue Jayden, all while struggling to pay the magical debt that is slowly killing her. Unless of course, the princesses' annoying sibling rivalry kills her first.

Packed with powerful magic, fun-loving fairies and a vicious ogre turned pet, Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell is a fantasy kid's book sure to become a top ten favorite in middle grade fiction.

REVIEW

Even in a kingdom where magical creatures like fairies, cave bodkins and talking sea turtles, who act as life savers, live, someone will plot to assassinate a perfectly good king.  While Fiona and her talking horse, Manzy, are trying to rescue her fairy friend, Jayden, from imprisonment in a palace tower, they, together with the three princesses, learn of the assassination plans.  Fortunately they have Kevin, the sneezing snake who loves to bat his long eyelashes at everybody, to assist them.  When an embittered, spell casting hag and her snow spider friends enter the picture, the would-be assassins are not their only problem.

This comfortably paced, easy to read book is full of adventure, some sadness and a lot of humor.  The cleverly crafted, versatile characters endeared themselves to me from the word go.  I had to smile when it appeared that Fiona's horse, Manzy, seemed to have more wisdom and sense than her mistress; and is it wise to entrust the magical ability to enlarge or shrink objects to a toddler?

Amidst the suspense and adventure there is also the gentlest touch of youthful romance and a lesson about the negative effect of jealousy, revenge and bitterness.

Although “Fiona Thorn and the Carapacem Spell” is clearly a book for younger children, I am sure that adults will enjoy this highly original story just as much.  If you thought the old fashioned fairy tale was dead, this book will convince you otherwise.

REVIEW: "RISE OF THE DEMONS" (Oceans of Red, Volume 1) - by Willow Cross

RISE OF THE DEMONS
(Oceans of Red, Volume 1)
by Willow Cross

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

By 2015 the streets of Los Angeles have been transformed from a thriving metropolis to a hostile world ravaged by demons bent on assimilating the human race. Standing between this total apocalypse of humanity and their chance for survival is 19 year old Remy Martin.

A warrior in her own right, trained to think on her feet and kill if the situation requires, she is flanked by her older brother and younger sister. Together, they devise a plan to take back the streets. Against the wishes of their father, who commands the resistance forces, they venture into unknown realms of the supernatural in a race against time with the fate of the entire world in their young hands.

Join them on their mission into darkness where death lies around every corner, it is virtually impossible to distinguish your enemies from your allies, and a single mistake could result in the annihilation of everyone you’ve ever known and loved

REVIEW

I haven’t read a Willow Cross novel in a while, and I’ve quite honestly forgotten how well this author writes. Although it is apparent that she writes with the YA reader in mind, her books are suitable for older readers as well. “Rise of the Demons” is no different. In the span of forty pages, the author manages to successfully create a post-apocalyptic-like world a few years into the future where humans are being used as vessels by demons who are in the throes of taking over the world. Remy and her two siblings fight these demons as a measure to save whatever is left of humanity. In the process Remy discovers that she’s more than what she seems, and quite possibly the one to save the human race.

With three butt-kicking characters and a strong story line with a cliffhanger ending that promises more action, suspense, and shocking revelations in the next installment in this series, you definitely can’t go wrong to get your hands on this gripping novella. Fast moving and unrelenting, “Rise of the Demons”, will keep you rooted to the edge of your seat from start to end!

REVIEW: "THE LAST TIMEKEEPERS AND THE ARCH OF ATLANTIS" - by Sharon Ledwith

THE LAST TIMEKEEPERS AND THE ARCH OF ATLANTIS
by Sharon Ledwith

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

When Amanda Sault and her four classmates are caught in a major food fight at school, they are given the choice of suspension or yard duty. It was a no-brainer. A two-week crash course in landscaping leads the kids to discover a weathered stone arch buried in an overgrown backyard. Instead of a forgotten lawn ornament, it turns out to be an ancient time portal from the lost continent of Atlantis. Chosen by an Atlantean Magus to be Timekeepers—legendary time travelers sworn to keep history safe from an evil force—the five children, along with two offbeat adults, are sent on the adventure of their lives to save the Earth from an uncertain future. The Timekeepers’ first mission lands them in England in 1214, where they must find an adolescent Robin Hood and his band of merry teens before history is turned upside-down.

REVIEW

What a delightful, fun read!  Who could imagine that a punishment could turn into high adventure for five adolescents and two adults - one an unemployed professor and the other said to be a witch - or in the words of the locals: "a bona fide, true-blue hex-machine from England"?  From a garden in America they are drawn through the Arch of Atlantis, into an Atlantean temple to be told what they are and what their purpose is.  Then they are propelled into medieval England on the eve of the May Day celebrations at Nottingham.  The seven discover that the sheriff of Nottingham had vanished and been replaced by somebody from their own time and that history is on the brink of going horribly astray.  So, how about creating some chaos to restore the natural order and ensure that history runs its course?

“The Last Timekeepers and the Arch of Atlantis” is a wonderfully humorous and highly exciting read.  Between laughing out loud at the extremely lively, witty dialogue and smiling at the bickering of the characters, I found it difficult to be serious even when disaster seemed imminent.

The marvelously realistic and unique characters endeared themselves to me in the very first couple of chapters.  It was fascinating to see how each of them developed and discovered their unique talents during the course of the story.  An artificial hand that becomes a magical artifact, and a slingshot made from a forked branch and a jockstrap, are just some of the highly unusual things that can happen when your mission requires you to use what you have on your person, and only that.  Although the story in itself is really outstanding, the dialogue and interaction of the children, liberally spiced with hilarious wordplay, makes it a truly unforgettable read.

This is the kind of book you would want to keep and reread whenever you need to laugh and relax.  Suitable for readers of all ages, I wish I could give this book more than the five stars it most definitely deserves.

Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her back to her one true love?

REVIEW

Once again S.G. Rogers hooked me with a wonderful and enthralling read that had me devouring page after page way past my bedtime. In this book you’ll find everything you expect to come across in a great fantasy novel – magic crystals, wizards, dragons, trolls, and much much more. At first I thought this was going to be something very similar to “The Hunger Games”, but this story is something refreshingly unique, and nowhere close to Suzanne Collins’s dystopian novel.

As with her previous book “The Last Great Wizard of Yden”, the author has once again created a world in which readers can immerse themselves comfortably; with characters that steal your heart, “Tournament of Chance” takes you on a journey through time with loveable characters and surprising plot twists that leaves you breathless. I was left in awe of this author’s boundless imagination as she transports the reader to places only reached by the wildest imagination.

This is a fantastic YA read which I highly recommend for young and old alike! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
